Customs

The Achuar people have their own style of dress, ways of hunting, fishing and building houses, and their own believes, including belief in the “Arutam” (the spirit that gives people power) when they take ayahuasca, toé and tobacco. Learn more

Handcrafts

Women and men create handcrafts. Women mainly weave and make pots and other ceramic items from local types of clay. Men make baskets, canoes, oars, mortars for grinding food, blowguns and other items. Learn more

Music and Dance

When work is finished, the person who organized the work throws a party. Men and women, adults and youth take part in these events, which help solidify friendships, as well as in ceremonies. They play musical instruments such as the drum, flute and violin. The men play the instruments and the women dance.

Food

The Achuar people share their food with relatives and neighbors. They cultivate crops, hunt and fish. The Achuar people do not sell food to other family members; they only share. Learn more
