HistorY – the arrival of the western world

The relationship between the Achuar people and the Western world has always been marked by conflict. In 1557, Juan de Salinas entered their territory and founded several colonies, but the Jíbaros destroyed them in 1599. Military and missionary incursions during the next century also failed. It is estimated that the aboriginal population at that time was about 30,000. The conflict was not only with westerners, however. For many centuries, the Achuar were at war with other ethnic groups along the Pastaza and Morona rivers, such as the Huambisa and Candoshi.

In 1767, the Jesuits moved into the Jíbaro territory, but they were forced to withdraw that year. Later, between 1790 and 1803, the Franciscans tried to evangelize the people, but without success. The Jesuits returned in 1869, but a series of revolts between 1873 and 1886 forced them out again. During the rest of the 19th century, various travelers, missionaries and explorers arrived, but none stayed.

In the 20th century, Protestant and Catholic missionaries moved into the area, but hostility toward whites persisted until the late 20th century.
