Bi-national Coordinating Committee of the Achuar Nationality of Ecuador and Peru (Coordinadora Binacional de Nacionalidad Achuar del Ecuador y Perú – COBNAEP)

COBNAEP was created to coordinate the activities of the Achuar people in Ecuador and Peru after the signing of the peace treaty between the two countries by Ecuadoran President Jamil Mahuad and Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori in 1998. Since then, the indigenous people in Ecuador and Peru have shown great interest in holding bi-national meetings. The Shuar, Wampis, Aguaruna and Achuar of Peru and Ecuador met in December 5-10, 1998, in the community of San Juan (Peru). They later held a second meeting in the canton of Sucua (Ecuador). During these meetings, there was dialogueabout establishing a bi-national organization. Two more meetings were held for this, the first in the community of WAMPUIK (Ecuador) and the second in the community of UWIJINT (Peru) on October 8-12, 2001. Thanks to these meetings, the Bi-national Coordinating Committee of the Achuar Nationality of Ecuador and Peru (COBNAEP) was formed.
