ACHUAR ORGANIZATIONS

The Achuar are formally organized in five organizations. The first, COBNAEP, is responsible for coordinating with the Achuar people in Ecuador. The second, FENAP, is the national organization of the Achuar in Peru. The other three are regional organizations: ATI, ORACH and FECONACO.

FENAP has two local organizations, ATI and ORACH, which represent the Achuar in the district of Andoas.

FECONACO represents the Achuar in the district of Trompeteros. All the organizations coordinate among themselves and work together for a better life for the Achuar people.

The organizations listen to the communities’ needs. For example, they help seek scholarships for young people and work with NGOs on projects in areas such as Human Rights. Through their organizations, the Achuar people also continue to fight against petroleum, mining and timber companies.

The Achuar people elect representatives to work in the organizations for terms of between one and five years.
